The Problem
Year after year, people are killed and injured on Jersey City streets due to vehicle crashes.
But you see this every day you go out. It’s hard to get through a day without seeing bad road behavior from all road users, or to feel unsafe when you try to cross the street in a crosswalk.
Cars refusing to yield. Large trucks driving on small streets. Pedestrians watching their phones instead of traffic. Bikes on the sidewalk. Illegally parked cars crowding corners. Double parking. And too many vehicles going too fast. The culture around safe road use for all is broken.
Safe Streets JC began with a crash, when our neighbor was killed crossing Kennedy Blvd. The more we worked to prevent future deaths, the more we saw that Jersey City has a city-wide traffic safety problem.
The Good News?
Most crashes are easily preventable, through controlling speed, and through smart design which makes roads safer for all users (including drivers!).
But to make that happen, residents must demand it from our leaders. Join us!
